In 1944, Buddy is a 10-year-old girl living in Selukwe, Southern Rhodesia. She and her younger brother Jody are being looked after by their gran, Anna, for a few months. This is because their parents have left for South-Africa, where her father has to undergo an operation. So, Buddy writes them many letters, embellished with delightful little sketches.
In the absence of television (thank goodness), the kids think of many ways to entertain themselves. They also look forward to Guy Fox and love the local cinema, so never miss a matinee - especially when the likes of George Formby or Jeanette Macdonald come to town.
